What is an immigrant?
An immigrant is a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.
Although this may be where we are from, we are familiar with the country and culture, but for immigrants this is all foreign.
Why is immigration a problem?
Immigration is a difficult topic to discuss but it is a discussion that needs to happen. Many families face coming to America with little to no needs to survive. In have been other struggles like this in America, one of those that faced struggles and did not give up was Frederick Douglass. For example in his narrative he states "Freedom now appeared, to disappear no more forever. It was heard in every sound, and seen in everything.” (Douglass, 35). Many immigrants can relate because they make their way to a foreign country in search for freedom. In the graph above you can see the rise in immigrants as of 2018 with the census taking place we should have updated numbers as of this year. Immigrants face a lot of struggles besides their journey, for example some immigrants are judged just for their appearance, as shown in the following quote, “San Diego was a naval and Marine Corps base, where the wounds of the Vietnam War were still fresh, and not everyone welcomed our presence” (Bui, 66). Here author Thi Bui we are aware of the ignorance in the world and would like to take away some of the stress off their shoulders to make the transition smoother.
What is our goal?
Our goal at Immigrants Together We Stand, is to be a one stop shop for immigrants and others in need find resources to assist them in their resettlement such as: housing lists, food banks, lawyers and list for those seeking employment. We accept donations on supplies because a lot of people fleeing their countries and can only bring a small amount of things with them. In this quote “My parents packed our papers and one change of clothes for each of us. In the middle of the night, they woke us up to leave” (Bui, 230) author and immigrant Thi Bui speaks of the night she left her parents home country of Vietnam.
